French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a public statement in defence of Kylian Mbappe after reports emerged that the Real Madrid forward’s name appeared on an alleged kidnapping target list uncovered by French authorities.
“No one will touch Kylian. He has worn the France shirt. He is a national treasure”, Macron said, placing the state’s protection of the footballer firmly on public record.
French police detained an 18-year-old suspect connected to an investigation into alleged home invasions and abduction plots targeting wealthy individuals. Authorities reportedly recovered a list of 26 potential targets during the investigation, said to include footballers, business figures, and music industry personalities. Mbappe’s name was among those on the list, according to reports in France.
There is no indication that any attempt was made against Mbappe personally, that he was directly contacted by anyone involved in the alleged plot, or that he was at any point in immediate danger. The investigation into the wider criminal network is ongoing.
Macron’s response reflects both the political and cultural weight Mbappe carries in France. The forward is one of the country’s most decorated sportspeople.
While the off-field drama has drawn significant attention, Mbappe has continued playing without visible disruption. He has scored four goals in his first three La Liga appearances of the 2026-27 season for Real Madrid.
