The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it disrupted the activities of suspected kidnappers during an operation in Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State, near the Enugu–Benue boundary.
The operation involved close air support for surface forces targeting the suspected criminal group, according to a statement issued on Thursday by NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame. The Air Force said the aerial support helped disrupt the activities of the suspects and supported the advance of troops operating on the ground.
Following the mission, the helicopter involved made a precautionary landing about 10 nautical miles from its airfield after the pilot exercised professional discretion in line with established operational and safety procedures. NAF said the helicopter subsequently returned safely to base.
The Air Force described the operation as part of its ongoing efforts to support ground forces and restrict the movement of criminal groups operating in affected communities.
“The NAF remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal elements, providing close air support to surface forces and protecting communities through coordinated air and ground operations,” Ejodame said.
He added that the outcome demonstrated the service’s determination to deny criminal elements freedom of action and support efforts to restore security in affected areas.
The two operations highlight the continued reliance on coordinated air and ground operations in Nigeria’s efforts to counter kidnapping, terrorism and other armed criminal activities.
