Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says politicians seeking to join the party must provide proof of resignation from their former political parties before they can contest elections or hold party offices.

The position was stated during a stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna attended by party officials, aspirants and supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.

Modecai Ibrahim, Kaduna state chairman of the party, said the NDC wants to prevent infiltration by political opponents.

“No party member will be eligible for any party office or to contest election under NDC without presenting proof of resignation from their previous political party,” he said.

“Some people are going to come in as friends for our enemies. So we want to checkmate them before such happens.”

Ibrahim described the NDC as a growing political platform committed to justice, transparency and the rule of law.

Also speaking, Ben Churchill, legal adviser of the party, urged members and aspirants to conduct their activities peacefully and within the law.

“Don’t do things anyhow,” Churchill said.

“No matter how you enact this law, it is subject to interpretation by the judiciary.”

He added that the party would rely on legal knowledge and strategy in handling political disputes.

“We are going to work smart,” he said.

“We have the knowledge, we have the resources, we have the capabilities to do so.”

Party leaders said the meeting marked the beginning of wider consultations and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
