The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The party announced the decision in a communiqué issued at the end of deliberations during its ongoing inaugural convention in Abuja.
According to the communiqué, the decision aligns with the principles of power-sharing and rotational leadership between northern and southern Nigeria.
The party said the arrangement became necessary in view of the country’s current political realities and the desire to present a united front ahead of the 2027 election.
“Resolved by this convention mandatorily for 2027, that the Nigerian Democratic Congress hereby zones its presidential ticket for the 2027 presidential election to southern Nigeria for the remaining and single term of four years,” the communiqué reads.
The party also resolved that after the completion of the four-year term in 2031, the presidential ticket would automatically rotate to northern Nigeria.
“That upon the completion of the said four-year term in 2031, the presidential ticket of our great party, the Nigerian Democratic Congress, shall automatically and irrevocably rotate to northern Nigeria,” the communiqué added.
The NDC said the decision was taken in the “supreme interest of national healing” and to reduce sectional tensions across the country.
The party further said the arrangement would help position the NDC as a platform for all Nigerians regardless of region, gender or age.
