NDLEA Arrests 93-Year-Old, Doctor in Nationwide Drug Trafficking Crackdown

Major anti-drug operations uncover large-scale networks across multiple Nigerian states.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 93-year-old man and a 69-year-old medical doctor in a sweeping crackdown on drug trafficking across Nigeria.

The intelligence-led operations, conducted in states including Lagos, Ogun, Abia, Edo, and the Federal Capital Territory, led to significant drug seizures and the disruption of multiple trafficking networks.

In Abia State, operatives arrested Pa Friday Ahukanna Chigbu, recovering 7.7 kilograms of skunk from his residence. The nonagenarian reportedly admitted to long-term drug use and said he recently turned it into a business.

In a separate operation, an Ivorian national was intercepted at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with 1.49 kilograms of cocaine. Investigations led to the arrest of a Nigeria-based accomplice, a medical doctor, in Ogun State, where controlled substances were also recovered.

The agency also recorded major seizures in other regions. In Edo State, two trucks carrying over 7,000 kilograms of skunk hidden among beer cartons were intercepted.

In Borno State, operatives uncovered thousands of tablets of Rohypnol and large volumes of codeine syrup concealed in a trailer. Additional arrests were made in Niger, Imo, and Lagos states, including a couple found with over 100 kilograms of skunk.

NDLEA described the operations as a significant breakthrough in dismantling both local and international drug supply chains.

The agency says it will continue targeting traffickers while expanding public awareness efforts to curb drug abuse nationwide.
