North Korea and Russia have opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River, deepening transport and economic links as military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang expands.
The new bridge will allow cargo and passengers to move directly between the two countries, replacing a makeshift road arrangement that used the existing rail bridge.
North Korean state media said the bridge would support “personnel exchanges, tourism and trade.” Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin called it a “new symbol of friendship,” while North Korean Prime Minister Pak Thae Song described the opening as a “historical event.”
Russian state news agency TASS reports that the bridge can handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,323 people each day. Satellite imagery reported by the BBC in May showed the roughly one-kilometre bridge alongside new access roads, a border checkpoint, parking areas and other support facilities.
The bridge is opening as relations between Moscow and Pyongyang have reached an unprecedented level. Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a strategic partnership treaty in 2024. One that pledges mutual assistance if either country faces “aggression.”
Ukranian Concerns
Ukraine-focused OSINT group Truth Hounds, however, has raised concerns about the bridge’s potential military role. The group said it could become a covert logistics corridor supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. Researchers cited by South Korea’s intelligence agency estimate that North Korea has supplied Russia with between $7 billion and $14 billion worth of rockets, missiles and artillery shells. An estimated 11,000 North Korean troops are also believed to be fighting alongside Russian forces.
Truth Hounds said the bridge could facilitate the movement of North Korean military personnel and construction workers into Russia. It could also allow Russian technology and resources to move in the opposite direction.
Construction began in 2025 after Putin and Kim agreed to build the bridge during Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024. The project took 495 days to complete after delays. The bridge is initially expected to carry cargo, with passenger traffic planned to begin later this year.
