Nigeria’s athletics team delivered a remarkable performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. One that saw the nation win medals across multiple events and set new records.
Goodness Nwachukwu stole the spotlight by breaking her own world record to secure gold, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed a historic victory in the men’s shot put. Tobi Amusan also added another medal to her impressive collection despite competing with an injury.
Enekwechi made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s shot put.
The African record holder produced a winning throw of 21.07 metres at Scotstoun Stadium. An improvement on the silver medal he won at the 2018 Games and bouncing back from a fourth-place finish at Birmingham 2022.
The 33-year-old sealed victory with his fifth throw after defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand had led the competition with an opening effort of 21.03 metres.
Walsh settled for silver, while England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze with a best throw of 20.99 metres. The victory adds another major title to Enekwechi’s distinguished career. A five-time African champion, he remains the holder of the African shot put record. He has also established himself as one of the continent’s greatest field athletes.
Meanwhile, sprint hurdles star Tobi Amusan displayed her trademark resilience to secure bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The world record holder crossed the finish line in 12.60 seconds, earning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal.
Although she narrowly missed out on a third straight Commonwealth title, Amusan later revealed that she had been competing with a knee injury. One she sustained during Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen.
Despite the setback, the 29-year-old extended her impressive record of podium finishes at the Games.
Nwachukwu’s world-record performance, Enekwechi’s historic gold medal and Amusan’s courageous bronze capped an outstanding day for Team Nigeria. A showing that reinforces the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading athletics nations.
