Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy, says Babachir Lawal has now realised that Peter Obi only supports political arrangements that favour him.
In a post on X, Onanuga reacted to comments by Lawal, former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), accusing Obi of avoiding competitive primaries.
“The scales have now fallen from the eyes of Babachir Lawal,” Onanuga wrote.
“He now realizes that Obi, who dreads primaries, desires a consensus that benefits him alone.”
Onanuga described Obi as a politician unwilling to build political structures from the ground up.
“He goes to where other people have toiled to cook the soup and takes the biggest meat in the pot,” he said.
The presidential aide also labelled Obi “a very selfish politician”.
The remarks followed Lawal’s interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where the former SGF said Obi was “shifty” about issues concerning the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lawal had alleged that Obi preferred a consensus arrangement that would automatically hand him the presidential ticket instead of participating in open primaries.
“I think it’s fear. A politician who fears election has no business being one,” Lawal had said.
