Pape Gueye Quits Senegal Duty Until Coaching Staff Changes

Pape Gueye has announced he is taking a break from the Senegal national team until the current coaching staff is replaced.

The 27-year-old made the announcement after Senegal surrendered a 2-0 lead and lost 3-2 to Belgium after extra time in the FIFA World Cup round of 32. Gueye started the match before being substituted in the 66th minute.

In a statement on social media, Gueye said:

“I will come back to say a few words about the elimination… but I am announcing today that as long as this coaching staff is in place, I will be taking a break from the national team.”

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has faced criticism since taking charge in December 2024. He was also at the centre of the controversy that saw Senegal stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title after the team’s walk-off during the final. Senegal has appealed that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Gueye, who has earned 45 caps for Senegal, has not indicated when he could return to international football.
