Peter Obi has said he will never insult President Bola Tinubu, despite their political differences. The former Anambra State governor made this clear on Friday, September 25. He spoke at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu. The conference focused on the ballot, media and democracy.
Obi said political disagreements should focus on policies and leadership. According to him, politicians should avoid personal attacks during public debates. He stressed that he does not insult public officials, including governors and federal government officials.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government,” Obi said.
Speaking about President Tinubu, Obi made his position even clearer. He said the president deserves respect because of his office.
“Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” he said.
However, Obi noted that respect should not stop Nigerians from asking tough questions. Meanwhile, the former governor urged journalists to hold political leaders accountable. He said citizens must be free to question government decisions and performance.
Peter Obi also linked leadership values to the wider society. He encouraged media editors to examine politicians’ records, statements and qualifications.
For him, political discussions should focus on what leaders have done and what they can offer Nigerians.
