A fresh clarification has emerged over Peter Obi’s claim about his relationship with Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s family. Obi recently said he and his wife are godparents to Soludo’s children. However, an aide to Anambra First Lady Nonye Soludo has disputed the claim.
Obi made the statement on Friday at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ 22nd Conference in Enugu. He was speaking about his relationship with Soludo despite their political differences.
“My wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close,” Obi said.
The comment later went viral online and sparked questions from members of the public.
In response, Daniel Ezeigwe, media aide to the Anambra First Lady, said the claim was inaccurate. Ezeigwe said Obi is not a godfather to any of Soludo’s children. He explained that Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter. He also said Margaret Obi, Peter Obi’s wife, is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.
According to Ezeigwe, neither Peter Obi nor Soludo has served as godparent to the other’s children. He suggested that Obi may have simply misspoken during his remarks. Despite the mix-up, he stressed that both families remain cordial.
“The relationship between the two families is cordial and there is no need to misrepresent it in any manner,” he said.
Ezeigwe urged the public to disregard any impression that Obi is godfather to Soludo’s children.
