The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all schools across the state over a suspected diphtheria outbreak.
The directive covers all public and private primary and secondary schools and takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang issued the directive as part of urgent measures to prevent further transmission of the infection. According to the state government, suspected diphtheria cases have been identified in parts of Plateau State. The affected areas include Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
The government said the temporary closure is intended to protect pupils, students and school staff while containment efforts continue.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, the government urged schools to comply fully with the directive. School proprietors, administrators and teachers have been directed to ensure that the closure is observed. Parents and guardians have also been asked to keep their children and wards safely at home throughout the period.
The state government appealed for the cooperation and understanding of all stakeholders. It said the decision was taken in the best interest of residents and to limit the spread of the suspected infection.
The government added that further information about the resumption of academic activities would be communicated in due course.
