Operatives Raid Hideouts Across Awka
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 17 male suspects during raids on suspected criminal hideouts in Awka.
Police said the operation targeted cult-related activities and other acts linked to public disturbance.
According to officials, operatives acted on credible intelligence.
Cannabis and Other Items Recovered
During the raid, officers recovered dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
They also found containers of petroleum jelly, condoms, and other items linked to the investigation.
As a result, authorities expanded their probe into activities at the location.
Police Confirm Arrests
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrests in a statement on Sunday.
He said operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit carried out the operation in the early hours of May 24, 2026.
According to him, the raid focused on identified hideouts across Awka.
Suspects Linked to Alleged Cult Activities
Police said preliminary interrogation pointed to alleged links with cult-related activities.
Investigators also claimed some suspects may have connections to the Vikings Confraternity, also known as “Bagger.”
However, the investigation remains ongoing.
Probe Extends Beyond Cultism
Ikenga said detectives are also examining reports of unlawful and immoral activities at the location.
He explained that investigators want to determine the full extent of possible offences.
Therefore, police have widened the investigation.
Commissioner Warns Against Criminal Activities
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, warned against cultism and drug abuse.
He said the command would not tolerate acts capable of threatening public peace.
He also stressed that authorities remain committed to protecting societal values.
Full Investigation Underway
The police command has launched a full-scale investigation into the case.
Officials said the probe will determine each suspect’s level of involvement.
Meanwhile, authorities promised to provide further updates as the investigation continues.
