Police Stop Obi-Kwankwaso’s 2 Million-Man March in Akwa Ibom, NDC Reacts

Police cancel the Obi-Kwankwaso march in Akwa Ibom over security concerns, sparking anger from NDC and Obidient Movement leaders.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has kicked against the cancellation of an Obi-Kwankwaso march in Akwa Ibom State. The planned two-million-man march was scheduled for Thursday, October 1, in Uyo. The Obidient Movement organised the event to rally support for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of 2027.

However, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command stopped the march over security concerns. Police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said intelligence suggested some people could cause unrest. The command also cited limited manpower to manage the crowd. It directed political groups to reschedule all rallies and processions planned for Independence Day.

The decision angered the state Director of the Obidient Movement, Dr Benjamin Smith. Speaking at a press conference, Smith said police had earlier approved the march. He claimed organisers spent more than N20 million mobilising supporters across the state’s 31 local government areas. Smith also said the organisers met with police officials on September 29 over the planned event.

“We have spent over N20m to mobilise our supporters,” he said.

Meanwhile, Smith accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of influencing the postponement. He said the movement would not accept another cancellation in the future. Despite the setback, Smith urged supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding. He added that the group would announce a new date for the rally.

The development has now added fresh tension to political activities in Akwa Ibom ahead of the 2027 elections.
