Police Suspend Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement After Court Order

Police Suspend Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement After Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the planned enforcement of its tinted glass permit policy following a court order.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the development on Thursday. He said the suspension halts enforcement that was scheduled to begin on January 2, 2026.

According to Hundeyin, the police will maintain the suspension until the court hears and determines the substantive suit or lifts the order.

Court Order Forces Another Pause

The decision marks another pause in the enforcement of the policy. The regulation requires motorists with tinted vehicle windows to obtain permits from the police.

Although the police had earlier announced a return to enforcement in January, the court order has now stopped the process. As a result, motorists will not face enforcement action for now.

Police Cite Security Concerns

Previously, the police said they planned to resume enforcement due to rising vehicle-related crimes.

“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” Hundeyin said. He added that criminals had used such vehicles for offences including armed robbery and kidnapping.

The police maintained that enforcement aimed to improve public safety and strengthen crime prevention efforts nationwide.

Earlier Suspension Was Voluntary

Hundeyin also clarified that earlier suspensions of the policy were voluntary. He said no court order had stopped enforcement at the time.

According to him, the police paused enforcement in October to give motorists enough time to regularise their documents. However, the new court order has now made the suspension mandatory.

The police did not disclose when the court will hear the case. Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to stay informed as the legal process continues.
