Qatar score stoppage-time equaliser to draw with Switzerland

Boualem Khoukhi scored deep into stoppage time as Qatar rescued a draw against Switzerland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Qatar claimed their first-ever point in FIFA World Cup history after a last-minute goal secured a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in San Francisco.

Switzerland looked set for victory after Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the first half. The spot-kick was awarded after Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler inside the box.

The Swiss dominated much of the match and created several chances to extend their lead but failed to take them. There was also debate over a possible offside in the build-up to the penalty. After review, VAR officials allowed the goal to stand.

Qatar capitalised on Switzerland’s missed opportunities when defender Boualem Khoukhi headed home in the fifth minute of added time to spark celebrations among the Gulf nation’s supporters.

The result gives Qatar a historic first World Cup point and keeps their hopes alive in the tournament. While Switzerland will be left frustrated after letting victory slip away in the closing moments.
