Rivers PDP Rejects Ibadan National Convention

Rivers PDP leaders reject Ibadan convention

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the national convention held in Ibadan on Saturday. The state chapter insists that the exercise was unlawful. It also claims that its resolutions are unenforceable.

In a statement signed by Publicity Secretary Kenneth Yowika, Rivers PDP commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for staying away. Yowika said the commission’s absence affirmed its commitment to due process and democratic norms.

The statement referenced two Federal High Court orders restraining the PDP from conducting the convention. This came even though a separate High Court in Ibadan had permitted it. Consequently, Rivers PDP described the gathering as a blatant defiance of valid court orders.

Convention Proceeded Despite Court Orders

Despite the court orders, the party proceeded with electing new national officials. It also dissolved certain state executive committees. Yowika dismissed the convention as a “sham” and emphasized that INEC’s refusal to participate demonstrated respect for the rule of law.

Furthermore, he warned that the convention would ultimately be nullified by the courts. Rivers PDP urged its members to remain steadfast. They were encouraged to trust the judicial process.

Rivers PDP Stresses Judicial Faith

The statement read, “The ill-advised convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny as it is already sub judice at the Court of Appeal. Therefore, we rest our faith solely on the judiciary and urge all members to do the same.”

The Rivers PDP’s rejection highlights the ongoing tensions within the party. It also underscores the critical role of the judiciary in resolving disputes among political factions. Members and observers are now awaiting a decisive court ruling. This could determine the legitimacy of the Ibadan convention.
