Romania condemns the attack after a Russian drone crashes into a residential building near the Ukraine border.
A Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania early Friday, injuring two people and causing a fire, according to Romania’s defence ministry.
The drone struck a residential tower in the city of Galați during a wave of Russian attacks targeting nearby areas of Ukraine.
Emergency officials said the drone’s explosive payload fully detonated after impact, sparking a fire on the 10th floor of the building. Around 70 residents were evacuated while firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Romania Calls Russian Drone Strike a “Serious Escalation”
Romania’s foreign ministry described the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia.
Authorities confirmed two people received medical treatment for minor injuries caused by the explosion and debris.
Romania also informed NATO about the incident and requested faster deployment of anti-drone defence systems.
A NATO spokesperson condemned what it called Russia’s “recklessness” and said the alliance would continue strengthening regional defences.

Romania’s defence ministry said two F-16 fighter jets were deployed after drones were detected entering Romanian airspace.
Officials tracked one drone as it crossed into Romanian territory before crashing into the apartment building in Galați, a city located close to the Danube River border with Ukraine.
Romania says drone fragments linked to the war in Ukraine have landed on its territory 47 times since 2022.
Russia-Ukraine War Continues to Spill Across Borders
