At least twelve people have been killed and seventeen others injured, including two children, after Russian missile and drone strikes hit Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight, Ukrainian officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Six of the eight fatalities in Kyiv were employees of the state rail company Ukrzaliznytsia, killed when a railway depot was struck. Fires broke out across three districts of the capital in the aftermath of the attack. Four more people died in the town of Boryspil after a missile hit a residential building there.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had fired a “significant number of jet drones and ballistic missiles” overnight. Eight other Ukrainian regions also came under attack. Nearly 350 rescue workers operated through the night across Kyiv and the wider region. Zelensky confirmed that an Indian national was among the casualties.
Russia’s military described the overnight operation as a “massive strike using high-precision weapons” aimed at Ukraine’s “military-industrial and fuel-energy” facilities. One person was also killed in Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s Belgorod region, according to the area’s acting governor.
The strikes follow a devastating attack last Friday in which 38 people were killed after Russian missiles hit a weapons depot in the Kyiv region. An attack that triggered a chain reaction of detonating shells, mines, and drones.
The overnight attack drew international attention beyond the usual diplomatic expressions of concern. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged Vladimir Putin directly to end the war, saying every day of continued conflict set humanity back.
The statement carried particular significance given that India’s economy depends heavily on discounted Russian oil. This has made Modi one of the more consequential voices capable of applying private pressure on Moscow.
