Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says President Bola Tinubu is in a strong position to win the 2027 presidential election.
Sowunmi spoke during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday.
‘Tinubu is sitting pretty’
Sowunmi said Tinubu currently enjoys a political advantage over his rivals.
According to him, the president has strengthened his political structures across the country.
“Before now, it was his election to lose,” he said.
“But right now, it will be magical for anybody to easily beat him.”
“The president is sitting really pretty.”
Says APC has stronger machinery
Furthermore, Sowunmi said the All Progressives Congress (APC) has built a formidable political machine.
He argued that the party’s structures are already active ahead of the next general election.
“His political machinery is well-oiled,” he said.
“You can see that almost all their structures are beginning to fire on.”
“So my bet right now is that the president will win it.”
He added that Tinubu is also likely to retain a majority in the national assembly.
Raises concerns over opposition
Meanwhile, Sowunmi warned that opposition parties face serious internal challenges.
He said the PDP could struggle if its legal disputes persist.
“If we’re not careful, we may not even have any of those candidates,” he said.
He also questioned the ability of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to quickly build nationwide grassroots structures before the election.
Calls for stronger political parties
In addition, Sowunmi urged political parties to build enduring institutions instead of revolving around individuals.
He argued that Nigeria’s democracy would remain weak if parties continue to serve personal ambitions.
“The stability of political parties cannot be built around the ambition of individuals,” he said.
“We cannot bequeath chaos to the next generation and call it democracy.”
