Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
Shettima left Abuja on September 20 to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the global meeting. During the visit, he delivered Tinubu’s national statement at the General Debate. Nigeria also renewed its call for reforms to the United Nations Security Council.
The Federal Government pushed for permanent African representation on the council. It also called for fairer global financing and stronger climate support. In addition, Nigeria urged deeper cooperation among nations. At the Africa Minerals Strategy Group roundtable, Shettima highlighted the need for Africa to process its raw materials locally. He said African countries should focus more on manufacturing and value addition.
Meanwhile, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to improving education. He spoke at a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy. The Vice President backed the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign. He described education as “a critical investment in productivity, human capital and national prosperity.”
Beyond the UN meetings, Shettima engaged Nigerians in the Diaspora. He highlighted their investments, expertise and networks as key to national development. He also met with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission. Another meeting involved UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. Their discussions covered development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security.
Shettima’s return marks the end of his latest international assignment on behalf of President Tinubu.
