Nigerian Afrobeats singer Simi has expressed her deep love for Nigeria, saying she adores the “spirit of Nigerians” but wishes the country worked better for its people. Speaking on a recent podcast, the Joromi hitmaker described Nigerians as creative, passionate, and full of life. However, she admitted that poor governance, economic hardship, and insecurity have made it difficult for many to thrive at home.
Simi on Why Nigerians Are Leaving
Simi linked her remarks to the increasing trend of Japa — the mass emigration of Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad. She said most people would choose to stay if Nigeria provided the right environment for success. “If things worked the way they should, no one would want to leave. People love this country, but love alone isn’t enough when the system keeps failing you,” she said.
A Call for Better Leadership
The singer has often used her platform to speak out against corruption and injustice. In previous interviews, she lamented that Nigeria’s instability has “killed too many dreams” and forced many young people to settle for less. Simi’s comments reflect the frustration of many Nigerians who remain proud of their culture yet disappointed in the nation’s direction. She urged leaders to focus on policies that improve lives and restore hope.
