Nigerian social commentator and life coach, Solomon Buchi, has criticised people defending American mother Lindsay Clancy after she killed her three children.
The case has sparked fresh debate during her murder trial. Many people have linked the tragedy to Clancy’s reported mental health struggles. However, Buchi believes the conversation has gone too far in excusing her actions.
Buchi questioned the different standards people apply to similar cases. According to him, public reactions would look different if the accused were a man or a Black woman. He argued that such people would likely receive less sympathy.
“If the perpetrator was a man or a black woman, this wouldn’t be the conversation,” Buchi stated.
His comments have since triggered debate online.
Meanwhile, Buchi acknowledged that postpartum mental illness and psychosis are serious conditions. Still, he rejected the idea that mental health should automatically excuse murder. He also referenced his own experience with mental health struggles.
“I’ve battled mental health issues for seven years, but it doesn’t excuse murder,” he said.
For Buchi, understanding a person’s condition should not remove accountability for their actions. Beyond that, Buchi expressed concern over the support Clancy has received online. He reportedly criticised the more than $1 million raised for her legal defence.
The commentator argued that attention should first remain on the three children who died. He believes their lives and the justice they deserve should not become secondary.
Buchi’s position has added another layer to an already emotional debate about mental health, motherhood, race, gender and accountability.
