Sowore Says Nigeria Deserves Country of Concern Tag

Omoyele Sowore speaking on Nigeria’s Country of Concern designation

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has said that Nigeria should have long been classified as a Country of Concern for its repeated failure to protect citizens from violence and insecurity. Reacting to Donald Trump’s recent action, Sowore stated that “at every level, the Nigerian state has failed to safeguard vulnerable Christians, Muslims, and traditional believers alike.”

Sowore Blames Leadership Failure

The activist lamented that children, women, workers, and the elderly continue to suffer under “corruption and illegitimate leadership.” He cited ongoing violence in Benue, Plateau, Gombe, and Kaduna, as well as attacks in Katsina, Zamfara, Borno, and Yobe, stressing that both Christian and Muslim communities deserve equal protection.

Citizens Cry for Safety and Dignity

Sowore noted that Nigerians living under hunger, poverty, and displacement are still crying for justice. He argued that international attention may provide short-term visibility but cannot replace genuine home-grown reform.

‘Real Change Must Come from Within’

“No foreign power can fix what corrupt and careless leaders have broken from within,” Sowore declared. He said true redemption will come from visionary, people-centered leadership that unites the nation and values human life above politics.
