The Presidency has extended the deadline for Nigerians and other stakeholders to submit memoranda on the proposed National Policing Bill. The Presidential Working Group on the bill announced the new deadline as Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5 pm.
The group had earlier set Thursday, August 13, as the deadline. The Chief of Staff to the President and chairman of the working group, Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the extension on Thursday, He said the extension would give individuals, institutions and organisations more time to make detailed submissions on the proposed law.
Stakeholders invited to contribute
Gbajabiamila urged legal practitioners, civil society groups, security experts, state governments, academics and professional bodies to submit their views. Interested members of the public can also participate through the official National Policing Bill portal.
The working group wants stakeholders to address issues such as funding, command structures, recruitment, training and police jurisdiction. It also wants clear safeguards against political interference and abuse.
Bill to undergo legislative process
The working group will consider the submissions before preparing a final draft of the bill. The draft will then go through the required legislative process. The National Policing Bill portal opened on August 3, 2026, when Gbajabiamila announced the public consultation. The working group expects to present the completed Executive Bill package to President Bola Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026.
