President Tinubu celebrates Ibrahim Babangida at 85, praising his lasting impact on Nigeria’s politics, economy, infrastructure and development.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military leader, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on his 85th birthday.
Tinubu described Babangida as an outstanding leader who shaped Nigeria in many ways. In a statement by his aide, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Babangida’s years of service. He also highlighted his role after the 1985 military coup.
Tinubu said Babangida’s eight-year rule left lasting marks on Nigeria. According to him, the former military ruler influenced the country’s political and economic direction.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has,” Tinubu said.
He also credited Babangida with expanding the economy and developing key infrastructure.
Beyond that, Tinubu praised Babangida for creating agencies and institutions that still serve Nigerians today. He also said Babangida’s leadership helped shape Nigeria’s current state structure.
“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” he said.
As a result, Tinubu said Babangida’s legacy would remain part of Nigeria’s history.
Meanwhile, the President noted that Babangida still advises the nation from retirement. The former leader lives at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State. Tinubu said his counsel remains valuable to younger Nigerians. He wished the retired general good health, strength and many more years.
“May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” the President added.
