President Tinubu Defends New Borrowing Plans, Stresses Long-Term Value Creation

Tinubu defends new loans

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has robustly defended his administration’s external borrowing plans against mounting criticism from political opponents.

Writing in a published essay titled “From reforms to delivery: Our infrastructure investment and growth strategy,” the President emphasized that value creation remains the true measure of borrowing.

He asserted that foreign loans secured from international institutions and banks will channel directly into vital capital infrastructure to build a one trillion dollar economy.

Furthermore, the President maintained that these strategic investments will establish lasting assets and expand economic opportunities for future generations.

Consequently, the administration aims to silence skeptics by linking financial credit directly to tangible national development and job creation.

“What We Build”: President Lists Transformative Infrastructure Projects

Addressing public concerns, President Tinubu outlined specific high-impact national projects funded through the administration’s borrowing strategy.

  • Transnational Corridors: Funds will accelerate construction on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, and the Trans-Sahara Superhighway.
  • Power and Ports: Investments target critical electricity grid upgrades and the modernization of key commercial shipping ports in Lagos.
  • Productive Capacity: The President noted that these initiatives will connect economic regions, reduce logistics costs, and unlock industrial potential.

Additionally, administration officials highlighted that these infrastructure networks will directly generate hundreds of thousands of jobs and support local industries.

Economic Ambition and Responsible Fiscal Strategy

Shifting to broader fiscal policies, the presidency stressed that national economic ambition must support responsible and deliberate borrowing frameworks.

The administration will measure its success through completed projects, increased private investment, job generation, and improved living standards.

“Securing financing is not the achievement; delivering value is,” President Tinubu stated regarding project execution.

Meanwhile, financial experts continue evaluating the long-term sustainability of the proposed external borrowing plans amidst ongoing economic reforms.

Finally, the federal government remains focused on completing critical infrastructure to drive sustainable GDP growth across the country.
