President Bola Tinubu has urged state governors to prioritise roads and other critical infrastructure instead of embarking on what he described as white elephant projects.
He said improved road networks would strengthen security, stimulate economic activities and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.
The President also noted that governors now receive significantly higher allocations following his administration’s fiscal reforms. He urged them to invest the additional resources in projects that directly benefit the people.
Tinubu links roads to security
Tinubu made the remarks on Thursday while receiving traditional rulers from Oyo State at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The delegation was led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
According to the President, expanding road networks into underserved communities would improve economic opportunities. It would also enable security agencies to respond more quickly to emergencies.
He stressed that investments in strategic infrastructure have become essential as Nigeria intensifies efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes.
“The money going to the states today is four to five times what they used to receive. Nobody is borrowing to pay salaries anymore, and pensioners are receiving their entitlements,” Tinubu said.
‘Build roads, not flyovers’
The President urged governors to spend the increased allocations wisely by focusing on projects that improve the lives of citizens.
“Instead of building flyovers where there is no significant traffic, build roads and arterial networks that improve access, enhance the quality of life and enable security agencies to reach vulnerable communities quickly,” he said.
Tinubu said infrastructure planning should reflect the needs of the people and support national security objectives.
He explained that accessible roads make it easier for security personnel to respond rapidly to threats. They also improve the delivery of essential public services.
Tinubu outlines security reforms
The President also highlighted broader security reforms being pursued by his administration. He said the Federal Government plans to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions.
Tinubu also reiterated support for the creation of state police with constitutional safeguards to prevent abuse. In addition, he said the government would strengthen the Forest Guard to combat criminal groups operating in forests across the country.
The President maintained that infrastructure and security are closely connected. He said sustained investment in roads and rural connectivity would promote peace, drive economic growth and extend government services to communities nationwide.
