The Presidency says Tinubu is hale and hearty, working remotely during his extended vacation and expected back in Nigeria this week.
The Presidency has assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is hale and hearty. It also said he remains active despite his extended absence from Nigeria.
Tinubu had travelled for a three-week vacation but stayed away beyond his expected return date. His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, later confirmed the extension. He said the President added “a few days” to his vacation. According to Onanuga, Tinubu does not need to be in Abuja to perform his duties.
“Nigeria’s President is hale and hearty. He has been on a working vacation, which he is perfectly entitled to,” Onanuga said.
“In this digital age, he does not need to be physically present in Abuja to do the work for which he was elected in 2023.”
The Presidency said Tinubu has continued working during the trip. It noted that he met investors in France and helped facilitate a $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun Waterside.
Onanuga also addressed questions about Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly. He pointed out that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also missed the event.
Meanwhile, Onanuga said Tinubu had announced his annual vacation before leaving Nigeria. He also delegated Nigeria’s representation to Vice President Kashim Shettima. The presidential aide accused Peter Obi of pretending not to know Tinubu’s whereabouts.
Tinubu is expected back in Nigeria this week. His return comes ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary and the Lagos premiere of a film honouring late businessman MKO Abiola.
