The Federal Government has launched a $100 million gas distribution pipeline project through the South East Development Commission (SEDC).
This ambitious 400-kilometer regional infrastructure initiative aims to accelerate industrial growth, attract private investments, and create sustainable employment across the region.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by House Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, formalized the agreement during an investment ceremony in Enugu.
The network will connect natural gas resources directly to commercial centers and manufacturing hubs across Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states.
Consequently, the strategic venture has drawn widespread praise from regional leaders eager to revive local manufacturing and expand commercial productivity.
“Regional Integration”: SEDC Establishes Infrastructure for Economic Growth
During the signing ceremony, officials emphasized that the project addresses longstanding energy deficits that previously hindered regional manufacturing.
- Targeted Industrial Clusters: The pipeline will supply reliable energy to manufacturing hubs in Aba, Nnewi, Onitsha, and emerging agro-processing centers.
- Innovative Financing: SEDC committed an initial $3 million, leveraging public-private partnerships to mobilize the required $100 million capital.
- Projected Demand: Planners have identified approximately 150 potential industrial customers with an estimated daily gas demand of 254 million standard cubic feet.
Furthermore, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah commended President Tinubu for establishing the SEDC to fulfill decades of industrial aspirations.
Regional Governors Pledge Support and Accelerated Approvals
Shifting to implementation timelines, Southeast governors assured stakeholders of complete administrative cooperation to ensure rapid project delivery.
State authorities promised expedited right-of-way permissions and accelerated environmental impact assessment approvals for the pipeline corridors.
“Our young people will now find viable futures right here at home,” Governor Mbah remarked regarding job creation prospects.
Meanwhile, project developers and regulatory bodies are directed to maintain strict adherence to commercial discipline and environmental safety standards.
Finally, the initiative marks a major milestone in connecting natural resource wealth directly to productive economic activity across Nigeria.
