President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). This renewal gives him another five years to lead the agency. Marwa first assumed the role in 2021 after serving as the head of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse.
The extension means he will continue steering the NDLEA until 2031. His return reinforces the administration’s push to intensify the fight against drug trafficking and drug abuse.
Why Marwa’s Reappointment Matters
Marwa brings decades of military and administrative experience. He once served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States. He also trained at the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, which shaped his disciplined style of leadership.
Under his direction, the NDLEA has made major gains. The agency arrested over 73,000 drug traffickers and barons and seized more than 15 million kilogrammes of narcotics. It also expanded national campaigns aimed at reducing drug abuse, especially among young Nigerians.
Tinubu’s Message on the Marwa Reappointment
President Tinubu praised Marwa for his hard work and urged him to sustain the momentum.
He said the renewed term reflects confidence in his ability to curb drug trafficking and protect Nigerian youth from harmful substances.
Conclusion: Marwa Reappointment Signals Continued Anti-Drug Commitment
The reappointment marks a major step in Nigeria’s fight against drugs. With another five years ahead, Marwa is expected to deepen reforms, improve enforcement, and push stronger public awareness campaigns. His leadership will remain central to the NDLEA’s mission to secure communities from drug-related threats.
