Trump says Iran hostilities ‘terminated’ as ceasefire holds

US president says no fighting since April, but tensions and sanctions remain.U.S.

President Donald Trump has informed Congress that hostilities between the United States and Iran have “terminated,” citing an ongoing ceasefire and no exchange of fire since April 7.

In a formal War Powers update, Trump said U.S. forces remain in the region but are no longer engaged in active combat operations following the escalation that began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28.

The president confirmed he is not seeking congressional authorization despite the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Resolution, arguing that the ceasefire effectively pauses the requirement. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has also supported this interpretation, though some lawmakers dispute it and warn of a looming legal challenge.

While fighting has stopped, pressure on Iran continues. The U.S. naval blockade remains in place, and the Treasury Department has warned global shipping firms against paying any tolls to Iran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, citing sanctions risks. Trump added that recent talks with Iran have been inconsistent, saying he is “not happy” with the progress so far.

The conflict, which saw large-scale strikes and rising regional tensions, has now shifted into a fragile diplomatic phase with no final agreement yet in place.

The situation remains fluid, with ceasefire stability and future negotiations set to determine the next phase of U.S.-Iran relations.
