On Monday, the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) formally declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in the 2027 presidential race.
Ogun PDP and Ladi Adebutu Declare Support for President Tinubu Ahead of 2027 Elections
In a surprising political development, the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with its 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. The endorsement was made public on Monday during a political event held in Sagamu, which marked the official campaign launch and inauguration of the campaign council for Hon. Bolarinwa Oluwole, the PDP’s candidate in the upcoming Remo Federal Constituency bye-election.
This bye-election was necessitated by the death of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the former representative of the constituency, who passed away in January following a short illness.
Ogun PDP Endorsement Based on Regional Solidarity
While addressing party supporters gathered at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, stated that the party had resolved to back President Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing regional unity as a primary reason. According to Tella, the PDP in Ogun believes it is important to support a candidate from the Southwest, regardless of political affiliations.
“We have decided to back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Tella said. “Even though he belongs to the opposition in our eyes, we believe in supporting our own. Tinubu is a son of the Southwest, and we must rally behind him. Our support is not out of political convenience but out of loyalty to our region. The entire Southwest should come together and give him our votes.”
Tella emphasized that their support for President Tinubu would be unwavering, provided that the election process remains fair and transparent. He called for justice and equity in the political process, underscoring the PDP’s readiness to work across party lines in the national interest.
Response to Defections
Responding to recent defections from the Ogun PDP—notably that of Adekunle Akinlade, the party’s former governorship running mate, and several others to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—Tella dismissed their departure as inconsequential. He criticized the political value of those who defected, arguing that many of them lacked the capacity to even secure their own polling units during elections.
“Let no one be discouraged by the defections. Those who left added little to nothing to the strength of our party. They couldn’t even deliver their own polling units in the last election. Their exit doesn’t shake us,” Tella declared confidently.
Adebutu Calls for Change in Ogun, Supports Tinubu Nationally
Ladi Adebutu, the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections, also spoke at the event. While affirming the party’s lack of opposition to President Tinubu’s leadership and presidential ambition, Adebutu took a swipe at the current state government led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, accusing it of poor governance and neglect of the people’s welfare.
“Earlier this year, I met with the President in January and clearly told him that we, in Ogun PDP, have no problems with his leadership or his 2027 candidacy,” Adebutu said. “However, our fight is against the misgovernance in Ogun State under the APC-led administration. This platform—the PDP—must be used to challenge the status quo and advocate for real change.”
He further urged party members and constituents to focus on the bye-election as a critical opportunity to send a strong message to the ruling party and demonstrate that the electorate will no longer tolerate poor leadership. He reminded the crowd that the PDP had previously won 34 out of 35 wards in the Remo Federal Constituency, which he said reflected the party’s popularity in the area.
Bolarinwa Oluwole Vows to Deliver Quality Representation
Speaking at the campaign flag-off, Hon. Bolarinwa Oluwole, the PDP candidate for the Remo Federal Constituency bye-election, promised to offer effective and people-centered representation if given the mandate by voters. He assured constituents that he would prioritize their needs and work tirelessly to uphold the values and principles of democracy.
In a show of party unity, Engr. Kamorudeen Ajisafe, the National Vice Chairman of the PDP, officially presented the party’s flag to Bolarinwa, signifying full endorsement and support from the party’s national leadership.
