A 60-year-old man has been shot dead in Osogbo, Osun State, following a confrontation involving members of singer David Adeleke’s, popularly known as Davido, security team and an alleged gang member.
The victim, identified as Tajudeen Yusuf of the Oke-Ayepe area of Osogbo, was shot at about 4:00pm on Wednesday in the Ita-Olokan area. The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday. Further saying preliminary findings indicated that Yusuf was allegedly killed by suspected hoodlums shortly after the confrontation.
According to police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi, the incident occurred after Governor Ademola Adeleke and his nephew, Davido, visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun. Police said that after the visit, an ex-convict and alleged gang member identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, attempted to approach Davido but was stopped by members of the musician’s security team.
The confrontation reportedly escalated when other suspected gang members in the area became involved. The group allegedly blocked the palace entrance and disrupted the movement of the governor’s convoy before eventually leaving.
The police said the suspects were later believed to have shot Yusuf at Ita-Olokan as they fled the vicinity. After receiving reports of the shooting, officers were dispatched to the scene, where Yusuf was found seriously injured and lying in a pool of blood.
He was taken to the University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo for treatment but was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
