Twenty-one members of the Kano State House of Assembly have officially moved from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers announced their defection on Monday.
Why Lawmakers Defect
Abba Yusuf, Governor of Kano State, resigned from the NNPP. He cited issues of “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” as key reasons for his exit.
Abba is likely to join the APC in the coming days.
Kwankwaso’s Reaction
Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso said it is a betrayal. He declared January 23 as ‘World Betrayal Day.’
Implication of the Defection
The APC now has a majority in the Kano House of Assembly. NNPP, which is the party that brought them to office, has been left out. Nigeria has seen a massive move of elected politicians from the opposition parties to the APC. Many people think that Nigeria is becoming a one-party state.
