Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have repelled a terrorist attack on a military base in Zamfara State, killing several attackers and rescuing nine kidnapped civilians.
The Nigerian Army confirmed that one army officer and one police officer were killed during the operation. Furthermore, two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries.
According to the military, the attack occurred around 1:40 a.m on August 2 when terrorists attempted to infiltrate the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area.
The army said troops detected the movement of the attackers before they could breach the facility.
Soldiers responded with coordinated firepower, forcing the terrorists to retreat after suffering heavy casualties. Reinforcements later arrived and launched a pursuit after the fleeing gunmen reportedly abducted several residents from nearby communities.
The military said the pursuit led to the successful rescue of nine abducted civilians, who were recovered unharmed.
In a statement, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, confirmed the casualties among security personnel. He said the two injured soldiers were airlifted for advanced medical treatment and remain in stable condition.
Osoba added that troops have secured the area and are conducting follow-up operations. This is aimed at determining the full extent of the terrorists’ losses while preventing further attacks.
The army described the failed assault as another major setback for terrorist groups operating in north-west Nigeria.
It said the outcome reflected the growing effectiveness of ongoing military operations, which have continued to weaken the operational capability and morale of armed groups in the region.
Military Dismisses Rumours
The military also dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that six security personnel were killed during the attack.
“Contrary to rumours circulating online that six personnel died, only one army officer and one police officer paid the supreme price,” the statement said.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on terrorist groups and restoring lasting peace across the North-West.
