The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has admitted that some of its soldiers plotted a coup against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Background
In October last year, the federal government cancelled the Independence Day parade without offering a clear explanation. Soon after, reports surfaced that certain military officers had planned to overthrow Tinubu during the October 1 celebration.
Details
On Monday, Major-General Samaila Uba, director of defence information, confirmed that the military investigated the alleged plot.
He said the armed forces set up a probe panel to examine the incident. The panel has now submitted its report to the appropriate authorities.
Uba stated that the military will prosecute any personnel found culpable in line with Nigerian law. He added that the defence headquarters chose to disclose the findings to promote accountability.
Implication
With this announcement, the military has formally confirmed that a coup attempt targeted Tinubu last year.
