Soludo Reaches Deal With Onitsha Main Market Leaders, Promises Better Security

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo met with market leaders from across Anambra State in Awka. He aimed to address the recent closure of Onitsha Main Market and the ongoing Monday sit-at-home practice that hurt business in the Southeast. Soludo declared that all markets and shops must open every working day, including Mondays.

Directive for Full Operations

Soludo issued a firm directive during the meeting. He stressed that the state government had shown patience but now planned to enforce the law. Additionally he highlighted a new master plan for Onitsha Main Market that dated back to 2023.

The governor questioned why markets opened on Mondays in other Southeast states but not in Anambra. He said, “The government has been patient, but we are now prepared to enforce the law.” Soludo added that the move secured Anambra’s future and reassured investors of a full business week.

Options for Market Redevelopment

Soludo presented two options to Onitsha Main Market traders. They could level existing structures and build a new world class trading hub. Alternatively they could undertake a massive modernization project.

He emphasized that Monday closures would end regardless of the choice. This approach aimed to restore economic vitality in the state. As a result, traders gained clear paths forward for development.

Commitment to Enhanced Security

Soludo vowed to overhaul the security architecture in all markets. He promised to deploy more security personnel to markets and nearby areas, especially on Mondays. This step addressed traders’ fears and ensured safe business operations.

Dr. Law Mefor, the State’s Commissioner for Information, shared details in a media statement. He noted that the government committed to preventing harassment and boosting confidence among traders.

Response from Market Leaders

Market leaders expressed willingness to follow the directive. However they pointed out logistical and security challenges. Mr. Chijioke Okpalugo, Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, pledged that traders would start Monday operations.

This agreement marked a key step toward normalcy. Moreover Anambra aimed for stronger commerce and security in its markets.
