Gunna Continues His Streak with New Album The Last Wun, Sparking Speculation About His Future

Atlanta rap star Gunna has continued his consistent streak of releasing new music by dropping his latest solo album, The Last Wun, which officially arrived on streaming platforms on Friday, August 8. This marks the fourth consecutive year the artist has released a solo project, further cementing his place as one of hip-hop’s most prolific and steady contributors.

How many tracks are on Gunna’s new album?

The new project features a total of 25 tracks, including the previously released singles “Won’t Stop” and “Him All Along.” As expected, Gunna doesn’t go it alone; the album features a mix of international and local star power. He brings in notable collaborators such as Offset, Wizkid, Asake, Burna Boy, and Nechie, showcasing a diverse blend of sounds and styles that extend beyond traditional Atlanta trap.

What’s generating even more buzz among fans and industry watchers, however, is the album’s title. The name The Last Wun has led many to wonder whether this marks Gunna’s final release under his current label — YSL Records and 300 Entertainment. Although no official statement has been made confirming such speculation, the sense of finality in the title has raised questions about the rapper’s next career moves.

Gunna’s Narrative behind album

In an interview with Uproxx in June, Gunna gave some insight into the creative process behind the album, explaining that there was no overarching theme driving the project. Instead, he described it as a reflection of his current life experiences. “It’ll come to me just through life and just living,” Gunna said. “So for this album in particular, it’s no theme. It’s in current time of what’s happening with me.”

Adding a visual narrative to the music, Gunna commissioned Devon DeJardin, a contemporary painter, to create the album’s striking cover art. The cover presents the rapper in a sculptural form, reflecting both his artistic evolution and emotional state. Speaking with Rolling Stone, DeJardin shared his vision behind the artwork: “It was about trying to capture Gunna in his essence of where he is in his life. And then adding stylistic elements to it, to represent anger and vengefulness but also represent peace, stability, perseverance, grinding. It’s like he’s working through his pain and grit, and he has a literal chip on the shoulder as if he’s got something to prove right now.”

Gunna’s Musical Stats

Gunna’s track record on the charts is also impressive. He last secured a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with 2022’s DS4EVER, but all of his major solo releases have consistently landed within the top three positions on the chart. Furthermore, every album he’s dropped has climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart, illustrating his continued dominance in the genre.

Despite the success, the Atlanta rapper hasn’t been free from criticism or controversy. Notably, fellow rapper Freddie Gibbs appeared to take aim at Gunna in his latest album Alfredo 2, fueling ongoing tension between the two. While Gunna has yet to directly respond, fans are keen to see whether any of the lyrics on The Last Wun might address the shots fired by Gibbs or other critics.

As Gunna’s latest release gains traction, all eyes are on how this project will perform commercially and critically—and whether it truly marks the end of an era with his current label. Regardless of the future, The Last Wun stands as a statement of resilience, artistic growth, and perhaps, transition.
