Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has condemned the teargassing of protesters at the national assembly.
He warned that Nigeria is becoming a “now disgraced nation” — a phrase used by President Donald Trump to describe Nigeria’s failure to curb insecurity.
Obi reacted in a post on X on Tuesday.
His statement followed the dispersal of demonstrators who gathered to demand the passage of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results by the national assembly.
‘Harmless Citizens Performing Constitutional Duties’
In his post, Obi described the protesters as harmless citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
According to him, peaceful Nigerians were teargassed simply for demanding “free, fair, and credible elections in a democratic nation.”
“Again we are showing the world why we are now a disgraced nation,” Obi wrote.
Furthermore, he criticised political leaders who once claimed to be champions of democracy.
He said they have now become “destroyers of our democracy and the worst enemies of good governance.”
Demand for Mandatory E-Transmission
Obi insisted that Nigeria must adopt mandatory real-time electronic transmission of polling unit results.
He said the move would guarantee transparency and restore trust in elections.
“We insist that there must be real-time mandatory electronic transmission of polling unit results to ensure transparency and trust in our elections,” he said.
In addition, he urged Nigerians to resist what he described as attempts to undermine democracy.
“You are responsible to decide what happens in your country. You either allow tyranny or you allow democracy to reign,” he added.
Finally, Obi called for unity and divine guidance to build a country founded on justice, credible elections, and good governance.
