The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to distribute four million ECOCA solar cookstoves units to households across Nigeria, in a major push toward clean energy adoption and women-focused economic empowerment.
The initiative will implemented under the Green Economy Empowerment 774 (GEE774) programme. Of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. Targeting communities across all 774 local government areas in the country.
Expanding Access to Clean Energy
The large-scale rollout of solar-powered cookstoves aimed at reducing dependence on firewood. Charcoal, and other traditional cooking fuels that contribute to deforestation and indoor air pollution. By promoting clean cooking solutions, the government hopes to improve public health outcomes. Particularly for women and children who are most exposed to smoke from conventional cooking methods.
The ECOCA solar cookstoves designed to operate using renewable energy, lowering household energy costs while reducing carbon emissions.
Empowering Women and Communities
Under the GEE774 programme, the project also positioned as an economic empowerment tool. Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative expected to create jobs in distribution, maintenance, training. And after-sales support, with a strong focus on engaging women and grassroots entrepreneurs.
Officials say the programme aligns with Nigeria’s broader climate action commitments and green economy transition strategy. While simultaneously addressing energy poverty at the household level.
Nationwide Impact
With four million units set for distribution, the initiative represents one of the largest clean cooking interventions in the country’s history. If effectively implemented. It could significantly cut emissions from household cooking. Reduce pressure on forest resources, and enhance living standards for millions of families.
The MoU signals the government’s intention to combine environmental sustainability with social development. Ensuring that the transition to cleaner energy solutions directly benefits communities nationwide.
