FG to Release N48bn to 12 Federal Varsities for Lab Upgrade

The federal government will release N48 billion to 12 federal universities to upgrade engineering and technology facilities across the country.

Tunji Alausa, minister of education, announced this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to him, the government is executing the intervention under the Ministerial Monitoring, Evaluation and Implementation Committee for the TETFund Special High Impact Intervention Project.

Under the plan, each beneficiary institution will receive N4 billion. Consequently, the universities will rehabilitate workshops and equip laboratories with modern, industry-relevant facilities.

Alausa said the government designed the investment to close the gap between theory and hands-on training in Nigerian universities. In addition, he said the initiative will strengthen technical capacity and improve graduate employability.

“Our goal is clear: to produce job-ready, innovation-driven, globally competitive graduates,” he said.

The benefiting universities include:

  1. Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State
  2. African Aviation University, Abuja
  3. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State
  4. Nigeria Army University Biu
  5. Federal University of Technology, Babura, Jigawa State
  6. Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto State
  7. Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State
  8. Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Enugu State
  9. Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State
  10. Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State
  11. Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State
  12. ⁠University of Ileisha, Osun State

Committee inaugurated

Meanwhile, the government has inaugurated a ministerial committee to monitor and evaluate the project.

Alausa said the committee brings together engineers from multiple disciplines, industry professionals, regulators and academic representatives. As a result, the ministry expects stricter oversight and stronger accountability.

He added that the committee will track progress, demand transparency and measure outcomes at every stage of execution.

Partnership with TETFund

Furthermore, the minister said the government will implement the initiative in partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Alausa described the intervention as a strategic national investment that will reposition engineering and technology education to meet Nigeria’s development goals.
