Saudi Ministry of Defense officials confirmed that two drones attacked the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh on Tuesday. Additionally, the assault caused what the ministry described as “a small fire and limited damage.”
Attack Targets Diplomatic Compound
Two drones hit the U.S. Embassy complex in the Saudi capital early Tuesday morning. Subsequently, Saudi air defenses intercepted additional drones aimed at the diplomatic quarter during the same operation. As a result, no injuries occurred in the strike.
Ministry Releases Official Statement
The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced the details shortly after the incident. Officials stated that initial assessments showed the embassy sustained only minor material harm. Furthermore, the ministry added that the attack resulted in a limited fire at the site.
Saudi Arabia Condemns the Strike
Saudi Foreign Ministry officials issued a strong rebuke of the assault. Moreover, they called it a “cowardly and unjustified attack” that violated international law protecting diplomatic premises. Consequently, the kingdom warned that such actions pushed the region toward further escalation.
Incident Fits Broader Regional Conflict
The drone strike formed part of Iran’s retaliatory campaign against U.S. allies. Meanwhile, it followed joint U.S.-Israeli operations that targeted Iranian leadership and military sites. In addition, Iranian forces launched similar drone and missile attacks on other Gulf locations that host American bases.
Embassy Adjusts Operations
U.S. Embassy staff canceled all consular appointments and closed the facility for the day. Therefore, American officials urged citizens in Riyadh to shelter in place and avoid the area. Subsequently, the State Department advised all U.S. citizens to leave the Middle East amid the widening conflict.
