Benue Approves ₦450m Women Empowerment Fund, Backs Pilgrimage Sponsorship

The government of Benue State has approved ₦450 million as counterpart funding for a women empowerment initiative aimed at boosting economic opportunities for women across the state.

The decision reached during a meeting of the Benue State Executive Council chaired by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Boost for Women Entrepreneurs

The women empowerment funding will support the Nigeria Women Project. A program backed by the World Bank and implemented in partnership with the Benue State Government.

The initiative designed to empower women involved in small and medium-scale businesses. Helping them access resources, build capacity, and expand their enterprises. Officials say the state’s ₦450 million contribution will attract additional funding from the World Bank. Allowing the project to reach more beneficiaries and contribute to poverty reduction.

Pilgrimage Sponsorship Returns

In another decision, the council approved the sponsorship of 81 Muslim pilgrims from Benue State to Mecca for this year’s pilgrimage.

The government also assured that Christian pilgrims will receive similar support when it is time for the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Signaling a return to pilgrimage sponsorship in the state.

Honour for Veteran Journalist

The council also endorsed an executive order by Governor Alia to rename the Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation after veteran Nigerian journalist Dan Agbese.

The corporation will now known as the Dan Agbese Printing and Publishing Corporation, in recognition of his long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s media industry.

Council members praised Agbese’s legacy, encouraging young Nigerians to follow his example of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.
