President Bola Tinubu has directed service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, following a deadly bomb attack in the city.
Tinubu gave the directive in a statement posted on X on Tuesday.
The president said the move is part of efforts to take charge of the security situation and intensify operations against terrorist groups.
He described the attack as disturbing and extended condolences to the victims.
“The recent news from Maiduguri, Borno state, is profoundly upsetting. I mourn those who lost their lives, sympathise with the injured and stand in solidarity with the people of Borno,” he said.
Attack Leaves Casualties in Maiduguri
On Monday, an unspecified number of persons were feared dead, while several others sustained injuries after bomb explosions rocked parts of Maiduguri.
The explosions occurred around a market area and near a security post at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Sources said the bombs detonated almost simultaneously at about 7:02 pm.
Mohammed Kafaran, head of operations at the federal fire service in Borno, confirmed the incident and said emergency responders were deployed to the scene.
Tinubu Vows to Intensify Fight Against Terrorism
Consequently, Tinubu said the attacks were desperate attempts by terrorists under pressure from Nigerian security forces.
“These acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals trying to instil fear,” he said.
He commended troops for repelling coordinated attacks on military positions in the state.
“Our gallant military and civilian task forces will curtail and put them down,” he added.
The president said he recently approved additional equipment and operational support for security agencies.
He also directed emergency agencies to provide proper care for the injured.
“There is no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety. We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them,” Tinubu said.
“Nigeria will not succumb to fear.”
