Tinubu to Political Appointees: Resign by March 31 If You Want to Contest in 2027

President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) issued stated this in a statement on Tuesday.

The order is based on section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and aligns with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.

Directive Covers Ministers, Aides, Agency Heads

According to the circular signed by George Akume, SGF, the directive applies to all categories of presidential appointees intending to contest.

They include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants to the president.

It also covers directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals, commissions, and government-owned companies.

All affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the office of the SGF before the March 31 deadline.

Move to Ensure Compliance with Electoral Laws

Tinubu said the directive aims to ensure compliance with electoral laws and promote transparency in the political process.

He added that it would create a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.

The president urged affected appointees to comply strictly, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to credible elections and strong democratic institutions.
