Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state, and Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), are set to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), according to an insider.

Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, told TheCable on Friday night that Kwankwaso’s planned defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been finalised.

Furthermore, said the decision followed a unanimous endorsement by key stakeholders within the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Mohammed added that talks with the NDC are at an advanced stage, with only minor issues left to resolve.

“Discussions have reached about 90 percent. Only minor issues are left to tidy up,” he said.

In addition, he said Kwankwaso and Obi are expected to join the NDC early next week.

“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC on Monday or Tuesday,” he said.

Mohammed said stakeholders from all 44 local government areas in Kano met at Kwankwaso’s residence on Friday to deliberate on the move.

Consequently, he said, the meeting, which began around 3:30pm, ended with a unanimous decision.

“The stakeholders have unanimously given him the go-ahead to move to the NDC,” he said.

He added that Kwankwaso is currently in Kano and is expected back in Abuja by Sunday ahead of the planned defection.
