Tinubu Expands Clean Mobility Plan: Nigeria’s PiCNG Now Includes Electric Vehicles

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to also cover electric vehicles (EVs) — a move aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transport sector.

The programme will now be called the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV) and will serve as the central agency coordinating the nation’s clean mobility strategy.

From CNG to EV: What’s Changing

Also, Under the expanded mandate, PiCNG & EV will:

Continue CNG Development

  • Build Mother and Daughter Stations
  • Deploy Integrated Refuelling Units
  • Support CNG vehicle conversions
  • Provide related infrastructure and equipment

Lead Electric Vehicle Integration

  • Roll out EV adoption policies
  • Build EV charging infrastructure
  • Support electric vehicle deployment nationwide

This unified approach places CNG and EVs at the heart of Nigeria’s clean energy transport future.

Drive for Vehicle Conversion and Accessibility

However, President Tinubu has directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to establish a framework for rapid vehicle conversion that is both affordable and accessible to ordinary citizens.

To achieve this, the initiative will work with financial partners, including:

  • CreditCorp Nigeria
  • Other banks and financial institutions

Together, they will design innovative financing models that make converting vehicles to CNG or EV kits easier for everyday Nigerians.

Mobile Refuelling Units for Faster Reach

Furthermore, The President also ordered an accelerated rollout of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to:

  • Expand access to CNG refuelling quickly
  • Support remote and underserved areas
  • Aid smoother transition to cleaner fuel options
