Trump Pays E. Jean Carroll $5 Million After Civil Suit

E. Jean Carroll has received the $5 million awarded to her after Donald Trump’s appeals failed.

E. Jean Carroll has received a $5 million payment from US President Donald Trump following her successful 2023 civil lawsuit for sexual abuse and defamation.

Court records show the money was released from a court-managed escrow account on 9 July, one day after Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered the funds to be transferred. The payment follows the US Supreme Court’s refusal to hear Trump’s appeal in the case.

Trump has continued to deny any wrongdoing. However, a nine-member jury found him liable in 2023 for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. Her lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, described the payment as the enforcement of the jury’s verdict after years of legal proceedings.

The funds had been held in the Court Registry Investment System (CRIS) while Trump pursued multiple appeals. Under an earlier agreement between both parties, the money was to be released if the Supreme Court declined to review the case.

Carroll also won a separate defamation case in 2024, where another jury awarded her $83.3 million. This was over statements Trump made after she publicly accused him of assault.

The legal battles stem from Carroll’s claim that Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store in the 1990s. An allegation he has consistently denied.
