Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), says President Bola Tinubu’s recent remark on power supply in Jos confirms his campaign promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he fails to deliver stable electricity.
Obi made the statement in a post on X on Saturday while reacting to Tinubu’s visit to Plateau state following the recent killings in Jos.
During the visit, Tinubu, who addressed stakeholders at the airport, cited the lack of electricity as one of the reasons for his brief stay.
Reacting, Obi said the development reflects a disconnect between Tinubu’s campaign promise and the current state of power supply in the country.
He recalled that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu had promised Nigerians constant electricity within four years, adding that failure to achieve this should disqualify him from seeking re-election.
Obi said Nigeria’s power situation has worsened since Tinubu assumed office, noting that electricity generation remains below 4,000 megawatts while tariffs have increased.
He added that Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption remains among the lowest globally, falling below the African average.
According to him, the president’s comment in Jos highlights the ongoing challenges in the power sector and raises questions about the government’s commitment to improving electricity supply.
Obi also criticised what he described as a lack of empathy and urgency in addressing the hardship faced by Nigerians due to poor power supply.
He urged Nigerians to demand accountable leadership and prioritise competence in governance.
